EVENTS
HOMECOMING 1972
The 1972 Homecoming, one to be remembered, was planned
by chairman Tricia Hajduch and her committees. The activities
began on Thursday, October 12, with a parade winding through
the streets of East Chicago, concluding with a Pep Rally which
included the annual Senior skit. On Friday night. Bishop Noll
was victorious over the Gary Roosevelt Panthers with a 20-6
outcome. Halftime ceremonies centered around the coronation of
the queen, Robbin Barrera. On Saturday, the Homecoming dance
was centered around the theme of “Saturday In The Park.”
Couples danced to the music of “Heavy” as Dave Talenco was
crowned Mr. Touchdown.

delighted to receive a Christmas gift from John O’Brien. Dean Niedenthal comes to
the rescue of a frightened Joanne Firrek while Diane Irk, Celine Wuellner, and
Chris Mis are amused by the situation.
FALL COMEDY
Set in a large radio and television reference department,
William Marchant’s comical play “The Desk Set” was the
fall presentation under the direction of Mr. Joseph Mal-
czak and Miss Marilyn Popovich.
Reference department employees Sadel Meyer (Celine
Wuellner), Peg Costello (Robin Barrera), Ruthie Saylor
(Chris Mis) and their supervisor Bunny Watson (Diane
Irk) must combat efficiency expert Richard Sumner (Dean
Niedenthal) and the computer which was designed to re¬
place them. Department manager Abe Cutler (John
O’Brien) becomes a romantic distraction for Miss Watson.
A cooperative crew headed by Jon Radde and Maria
Hand contributed to the play’s success.

rrera and her escort pause amoung the picturesque decorations.
WINTER FORMAL
The days of chivalry and knighthood were recreated when the
B.N.I. cafeteria was transformed into a “Castle in the Air.” After
passing over a medieval drawbridge, couples entered into a fantasy
land created by decoration co-chairmen Nancy Bugajski and Mau¬
reen Mulholland. The music was provided by “Bus”. The success of
this mid-winter dance was accredited to the work of general chair¬
man Tricia Hajduch.
Couples dance to a slower beat of Michigan City Limits. Gwen Homco 1973

showcase. Peggy Simco and Dave Talenco enjoy a tranquil moment, apart from the
activities of the evening.
TURNABOUT
The Turnabout dance, sponsored by the Service Club, changes
the traditional boy-asks-girl custom. The success of this year’s
Turnabout can be attributed to the work of head chairmen senior
Gwenn Homco and junior Michelle Hicks and their committees.
The BNI cafeteria was transformed into an old French cafe
amid a city street as the theme “Cabaret” was vividly portrayed.
The couples enjoyed music provided by Michigan City City
Limits. The evening was highlighted by the crowning of Gwenn
Homco as Sweetheart Queen.

MARDI GRAS
With the aid of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Snow
White, the Mission Club sponsored the annual Mardi Gras on
April seventh and eighth. Colorful murals of the Disney charac¬
ters transformed the BNI fieldhouse into a carnival whose theme,
“Mickey Mouse and Friends Present the Wonderful World of
Disney” appealed to the young and the young-at-heart. At booths
such as the Swisheroo, Casino, Car Smash, Space Walk, and Cane
Toss, students competed for prizes, tested their skills, and wished
for luck. A dance on Saturday night opened the festivities which
ended after the crowning of Mardi Gras King, Tom Ispas and
Queen, Rosemarie Kresich, Sunday evening.
Enthusiastic seniors John Vrbancic and BUI Marianes get a start on their booth. Later,
roUicking in the “Space Walk,” Joni Wesson and Molly Ahlgrim have a fun time.
Melvin Flack takes time out for an ice cream cone.
Bingo seems to be a favorite with Laura Germick.
Exhausted Mardi Gras goers stand back and watch while Steve Motkowitz displays
his shooting ability.
Curly taunts Jud Fry (Joe Prieboy) to a perilous point in the number “Pore Jud is Dead.” Ali Hakim
(Dean Niedenthal), the fast talking Persian Peddler tries to slip a silk garter up Aunt Eller’s limb to the
amazement of Ado Annie (Diane Irk) and Laurey. Laurey is forced out of her dreams by the girls who
are telling her to make up her mind.

SPRING MUSICAL
Once again Noll’s Little Theatre came brilliantly alive as the
curtain opened on the 1973 spring musical, Oklahoma. The
setting is Indian Territory, Now Oklahoma, just after the turn of
the century.
Aunt Eller is the stable personality for Laurey who is troubled
over the rivalry she has caused between Curly and Jud Fry. Ado
Annie, who is constantly chasing Ali Hakim, becomes confused
when Will Parker comes back to marry her. But everything works
out fine, for everyone concerned.
Reverend Jack Winterlin both produced and took charge of the
choral for the musical, which was directed by Miss Marilyn
Popovich. She was assisted by student director Marianne Firrek.
Mrs. Mary Krick was choreographer, while stage crew was put
under the guidance of Mrs. Sharon Blumentritt. Mr. James
LaMantia was musical director.
The Dream Figures of Laurey (Maureen Mulholland) and Curly (Jeff
Svoboda) displayed intricate Ballet positions during the “Dream Ballet.”
The Territory Folks joyfully sing “Oh, What A Beautiful Momin” to
celebrate the marriage of Curly and Laurey. Curly (Jerry Rueth) tells Miss
Laurey (Alanna Purcell) not to be such a “smarty”, or he won’t take her to
the box social. As Aunt Eller (Marie Ambre) looks on, Will Parker (John
O’Brien) focuses in on some “purty pictures.”
Prom Queen and King, Nancy Klisiak and Lenny Ostrowski take delight in the evening music.
Robin Hoover and her escort exchange sentimental gifts. Couples dance in the elegant ballroom of the
Sheraton Chicago.

PROM
The Sheraton Chicago Hotel was the site of this year’s Prom
entitled, “Dancing in the Moonlight.” While couples enjoyed
dinner, they were entertained by the Rich Bendel Orchestra and
later danced to the music of the All Star Frogs. Towards mid¬
evening Lenny Ostrowski and Nancy Klisiak were crowned 1973
Prom King and Queen. Responsible for planning the night were
Jeanette Polance and Jean Verkuilen, co-chairmen.
Dianne Irk, Jon Radde, Sharon Harbert, and Greg Trzupek take a breather from the
excitement.
Holly Klosky and Jim Stiles enjoy each others company.

On May 28, 1973, Bishop Noll Institute honored its 395
graduates at the Fiftieth Commencement exercises.
The program was opened with a welcoming address from
Reverend George M. Vrabely, Principal, followed by speeches
from Salutatorian, Mark Nowlan and Valedictorian, Mary
Frances Gilbert. In her address she emphasized that through her
four years of high school, she “learned a great deal about living,”
and later led the graduates in their class song, “Let There Be
Peace on Earth.”
Mr. Douglas Parker, senior class sponsor, presented the gradu¬
ates as Biship Andrew G. Grutka awarded the diplomas. Seventy-
two students were honored with state scholarships.

CROSS COUNTRY
The 1972 Bishop Noll Cross Country team spearheaded by Se¬
niors Tony Klusas and Julian Brown, compiled an impressive
record of eight wins and three losses. The midseason loss of Tom
Vahey slowed down the Warriors’ pace but Junior Carlos Molina
and Sophomore Mike Matusz helped to fill his shoes.
The Warriors captured the titles of T.F. South Invitational and
Highland Invitational champs along with a fourth in the Patriot In¬
vitational and a second in the Hammond City Meet. The Warriors
ended the season with a seventh place finish in the Regionals.

ACADEMICS
BUSINESS EDUCATION
The Business Education Department, headed by Sister Rosita
and Mrs. Pihulic, provides effective courses for those interested in
becoming part of the modern business world. The business
courses enable students to fill a position as an employee, employ¬
er or proprietor. It also aims to train the student with sufficient
information and ability to fill stenographic and secretarial posi¬
tions. This year representatives form various business colleges met
with students in order to better the students’ understanding of the
business world.
Ramsay Macleod “punches keys” at an astonishing rate on the typewriter.
Mr. Bradtke helps Sharon Harbert while everyone else does their own work in
Bookkeeping Class.
103
Barb Szany attempts to improve her writing style. Mary Urban and John Adams take advantage of the
library and its facilities to help with classwork. Virginia Sasse and Ann Marie Zappia contemplate
which books will make good reading material.
ENGLISH
AND
LANGUAGES
Under the direction of Mr. Janies St. Amour, B.N.I.’s English
Department has constructed a four year program of literary
appreciation, writing skills, and related study. These topics are
being taught in daily English classes, speech classes and classes in
communication arts needed to assist the students in the fascinat¬
ing years ahead.
Through the efforts of the combined language departments and
Miss Karaffa, Biship Noll students now enjoy a program devised
to learn the languages, customs, literary background, history and
philosophy of various foreign countries. To aid the student with
accent and dialect, tapes, records and language labs are used.
Students listen attentively in English class. Visual aid speeches, like
the one given by Ann Marie Molenda, are an integral part of a
Speech class.
105
FINE ARTS
“Imagination is the key to fine arts.” This year’s Fine Arts
Department was directed by Father Jack Winterlin. The Fine Arts
Department offers students a variety of opportunities in several
fields, Band, Choral, and Art. The B.N.I. Band, directed by Mr.
James LaMantia provided music for many school activities in¬
cluding football and basketball games, along with parades, con¬
certs and musicals.
Under the direction of Fr. Winterlin, students learned the
fundamentals of music along with vocal skills in choral. This year
the choral and band joined together for the annual candy sale in
order to raise money. In the Art Department Mrs. Blumentritt
assisted the students in crafts, print making, ceramics, painting
and sculpture.
Michaline Kulesa carefully constructs a coil pot. Learning self-expression
through art is an accomplishment which involves concentration. Becky
Duwar and Debbie Garbacik find that block printing is enjoyable when
you have friends to work with.
106
HOME ARTS
The Home Arts Department Chairman, Sister Marjorie, guides
the students to a better understanding of the basic skills of
homecare. In the clothing division, students learn knitting, cro¬
cheting, and basic sewing methods. Students also receive a clear
insight into the industries of fashion and textile.
The Food Division, under the direction of Mrs. Sally Evanoff,
offers nutrition and meal planning with special emphasis on food
preparation. In addition to hearing daily lectures, the students
also have the opportunity to apply and practice the procedures
they learn in the classroom, through lab work.
Home Arts students learn the basics in cooking and clothing.
108
Mr. Queyquep helps John Vrbanic revise drafting notes. Philip Phillipov watches Mr. Joyce review Math work as
Dave Humbert studies the dimensions of a new drawing.
Randy Salach finds Math interesting. Wally Kasprzycki and Kim Kobuchar
take notes in Algebra class. Steve Buzinski listens carefully before
correcting a Math assignment.
Ill
MATH
The Math Department under the direction of Sister M. Imelda
prepares students for college and the modern business world.
Courses such as General Math, Geometric Algebra, Algebra
Trigonometry, Calculus and Computer Programming strive to
better the students understanding and interest in mathematics.
Over-head projectors and three-dimensional equipment make it
easier for students to grasp concepts of mathematics.
Sophomores use new weight machine during physical education class. Physical
education student attempts low hurdles. In addition to regular physical education
class activities underclassmen also enjoy swimming.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The Physical Education Department, run by Mr. William Arch¬
er for boys and Mrs. Sheila Kelly for girls, works to develop
coordination, speed and endurance. Above all, teamwork and
sportsmanship are stressed at all times. Students have the op¬
portunity to try their hand at basketball, softball, soccer, hand¬
ball, volleyball and swimming. Daily calisthenics and use of the
new Universal Weight Machine aid the students in becoming
more physically fit.
Cordell Purnell watches while John Piatti does all the work. Freshmen students
eagerly await the start of the race. Underclassmen find calisthenics quite
strenuous.
113
RELIGION
AND
SOCIAL STUDIES
The Religion Department is faced with the responsibility of
turning today’s students into dependable and outstanding citizens
of tomorrow. Emphasis is placed on modern Christian problems
and the role young people play in relation to them. The Religion
Department is headed by Father Michael Ruggaber.
The Social Studies Department under the direction of Mr.
Timothy Hyland is not only a factual study of past events but
also a study of how man has to cope with his problems through
the years. Sociology, geography and economics serve to rough out
the student’s knowledge of social studies.
Students talk to Father Ruggaber in his classroom. Sophomore students discuss a
chapter from their religion books. Pete Germick and Tom Karlowicz come to a better
understanding of Politics through U.S. Government.
115
SCIENCE
Students are introduced to the basic disciplines of science
I I l through the BN I Science Department. Sophomores study various
1 1 1 life functions in Biology, while Juniors endure the rigors of
< < < Chemistry. Seniors ponder the relationships between matter and
( ( i energy in Physics. Laboratory periods give students the opportu-
i i i nity to apply their classroom knowledge in experimentation. The
( < ' department is under the guidance of Mr. Walter Pikul.
Mary Bauer works dilligently at solving one of the many problems given to science
students. Smiles can be found even in Biology class. Mark Gargula checks his
calculations

In finding new friends, man grows
In growing, man finds new friends.
How strange it is that one will never exist
without the other.
For to hold friends, one must grow
And by growing, new friendships
are developed.
Man seems but a tree
To be nourished and pruned
by those around him.
In time, with care, he shall bloom
And bear the fruit of love
for all to share.
